What to Wear Under a Singlet (and Other Practical Wrestling Uniform Questions)
Once a program has settled on a vendor and a way of ordering, a handful of practical questions come up almost every time before the actual singlet order goes in. Here's what we hear most from coaches and athletic directors.
What Wrestlers Actually Wear Under a Singlet
Traditionally, most wrestlers wear nothing extra under a solid one-piece singlet. But a form-fitted compression shirt or compression shorts underneath is common, and at the high school level it's more than a preference — NFHS rules now recognize an alternate two-piece uniform option: matching compression shorts and a form-fitted compression shirt worn together, as a legal alternative to the traditional one-piece singlet. Female wrestlers typically wear a sports bra or similar undergarment under a singlet, and current NFHS guidance doesn't require a compression shirt in addition for female wrestlers wearing the one-piece.
Is Compression Gear Optional?
For youth and rec programs, compression gear is almost always about comfort and coverage preference, not a rule — optional, and usually left up to the family. At the high school level, it's more specific: under NFHS rules, if a wrestler wears a compression shirt that isn't school-issued, it generally has to be a single solid color with no separate markings, since anything else starts to function as personalization the uniform rules don't allow. That's exactly the kind of detail worth confirming with your program or state association before finalizing a design, rather than assuming.
Uniform Rules Vary by League and Level
Youth club uniforms usually just need to match team colors — there's no formal rulebook to check. Scholastic wrestling follows NFHS rules, which cover things like uniform color consistency, fit and coverage requirements, and limits on how large a manufacturer's logo can be. College wrestling follows NCAA rules, and freestyle or Greco-Roman competition follows USA Wrestling and international UWW standards — each with its own variations, and rules are updated from year to year. If your team competes above the rec level, it's worth confirming which rulebook applies and checking the current specifics with your league or state association before finalizing a design. We're glad to help make sure a design fits whatever rule set your team competes under, once you know which one it is.
A Realistic Order Timeline
Wrestling orders land in the same September-through-November window as basketball and volleyball — the busiest stretch of the year for uniform production generally. From an approved design to delivery, a straightforward singlet order typically takes a few weeks; the exact number depends on order size, time of year, and whether anything needs to be rushed. Ask for a firm delivery date when you request a quote rather than assuming one.
